Chateauneuf-du-Pape is well-known for its complex blend (thirteen authorized varietals can be used) and its distinctive wine characters: full-bodied, rich textured with concentrated spiced red fruit flavours balanced with high alcohol. Many of the best sites in Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation have very stony soils that absorb heat from the sun and warm the vineyards, aiding ripening of the fruits. This type of soil is perfect for Grenache.

Domaine du Pegau is one of the oldest domaines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It was founded in the 17th century by the Feraud Family. Pegau is regarded as the leading domaine for traditional style and age-worthy Chateauneuf-du-pape in this large and prestigious appellation. It is now run by Laurence who is brilliant and born with natural talent in wine making. With her incredible talent, almost every vintage's Pegau is sought after by wine lovers. No wonder Robert Parker spares no space to write such long reviews to praise its wines. Domaine du Pegau makes no compromises, nor changes their winemaking or upbringing styles to suit the whims of the fickle consumer.

At Pegau, grapes are hand harvested, then fermented without being de-stemmed. No fining or filtration is carried out. Cuvee Reserve is aged for around 18 months in large old barrels and Cuvee Laurence is made from a blend identical to the Cuvee Reserve, but is aged for another 18-24 months prior to bottling. It is only produced in very good years. Cuvee du Capo is a special cuvee released only in the best vintages, mostly from “La Crau” (the best terroirs of Chateauneuf). All thirteen varietals are included in the blend, and it was aged up to 36 months in a mixture of large and small oak barrels and primarily from old vines (100+-year-old). Rich, robust and concentrated, tend to show at their best with 7-8 years of bottle age. Wow, wouldn't you want to have some?!
